MAF NewsMAF News August 25, 2005 ANNUAL MASONRY ASSOCIATION OF FLORIDA, INC - STATE CONVENTION The Masonry Association of Florida, Inc. Annual Convention was held at the beautiful Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin, in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, August 18 through August 20, 2005. The events of the convention included a Golf Tournament at the Eagle Pines Golf Course, Silent Auction, Educational and Informational Seminars, Apprentice Competition, Fastest Trowel Competition, an Awards Banquet honoring the industry’s Top Masonry Projects around the state, and many other social events. In addition to the festivities and honors, the top apprentice masons from seven separate apprentice programs throughout the state competed for awards and the honor to represent Florida in the regional apprentice competition. Competitions were held for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students, and the judging was based on speed, skill and exactness of building brick and block sample panels. The first and second place winners will go on to the regional's. The winners of the Florida‘s Best Apprentice Contest were: First Year Competing Second Year Competing Third Year Competing On Saturday the Fastest Trowel Competition provided much excitement as spectators observed masonry teams race against the clock to lay as many block possible in the twenty minute time span. Fastest Trowel Competition winners include: In addition to the Apprentice and Fastest Trowel winners, the Annual State Masonry Project Awards recognized the best masonry construction projects in ten categories. The top Historical Restoration project was the Tampa Heights Monument Sign constructed by the Tampa Bay Apprenticeship. The winner for the top Institutional Project was the Taft AFRC Add. /Alt., constructed by Pyramid Masonry in Orlando and other winners include: Residential – Jones Residence – Ambach Masonry – Taveres Lifetime Achievement Award was given to: Associate of the Year was awarded to: Project of the Year was awarded to: “These projects represent the ‘best of the best’ in both design of and building in masonry construction”, says Salvatore Anastasi, President of the Masonry Association of Florida. “This year’s judging was particularly difficult due to the numerous outstanding entries”, Mr. Anastasi The Masonry Association of Florida is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated since 1987 to the promotion of quality masonry construction in Florida.
